News - Izmir earmarked for investment
24/6/10: The Turkish government is to invest around TRY 450m ($284.3m) in the Port of Izmir over the coming five years, Hurriyet reports.
As well as enlarging the Port’s passenger pier to host up to six cruise ships simultaneously, the government also intendts to construct a new container terminal at a cost of around TRY 200m.
In order to accommodate new-generation container ships, a new docking channel will also be dredged.
“We are expecting to increase Izmir’s port capacity to 900 TEU containers,” Transport Minister Binali Yildirim is quoted by the newspaper as saying.
“Thus the port will be listed among the top five European harbours.”
